Immigration, racism and nationalism have become hotly debated issues in the Western world. This highly original and controversial work focuses on the language used by the vast majority who regard themselves as being open to a multi-cultural society.Using Belgium as a case study and drawing parallels with the UK, US, Europe and the former Yugoslavia, the authors analyse this language and reveal a remarkable consistency between these liberal voices, such as in news-reporting, and the language used by radical racist and nationalist groups.

The urgent need to forge an inclusive, multi-racial, multicultural South African national identity has been one of the most dominant themes in post-Apartheid politics and society. With the realisation that many of the social problems which beset contemporary South African society are sociolinguistic in origin, the critical importance of language policy and planning for democratic ‘nation-building’ becomes evident. This book adopts a rigorous theoretical approach to the study of language policy and national identity, both in a general sense and with specific application to the sociolinguistic situation in South Africa. It also includes an entire chapter devoted to the issue of the status and role of Afrikaans in the post-apartheid era. Employing a strictly multi-disciplinary approach, the book draws on insights from a number of academic disciplines including sociolinguistics, the sociology of language, sociology, social psychology, political theory and social anthropology. The book will be of considerable interest to a wide range of academic theorists and students whose work is either specifically concerned with, or touches upon, issues of language policy and national identity, as well as language planners and policymakers, language pedagogists and educational organisations, both within South Africa and beyond.

This book highlights the need to develop new educational perspectives in which multilingualism is valorised and strategically used in settings and contexts of instruction and learning. Situated in the current educational debate about multilingualism and ethno-linguistic minorities, chapter authors examine the polarised response to heightened linguistic diversity and how the debate is very much premised on binary views of monolingualism and multi- or bilingualism. Contributors argue that the diverse linguistic backgrounds of immigrant and minority students should be considered an asset, instead of being regarded as a barrier to teaching and learning. From its title through to its conclusion, this book underlines the current perspective of multilingualism as possessing cutting edge potential for transforming diverse classrooms into more inhabitable, more equitable and more efficiently organised spaces for learning. This book will be of interest to scholars and researchers in educational linguistics, applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, anthropological linguistics, pedagogics, educational studies, and educational anthropology.
